Confluence of the Sandy and Columbia Rivers Troutdale, Oregon
1400 acres of public land at the mouth of the Sandy River are on the way to becoming restored habitat. The Sandy River Delta is about fourteen miles east of Portland on Highway 84, off Exit 18, next to Lewis and Clark State Park.
The delta sits at a transition point on the Columbia River. Six miles upstream is the mouth of the Columbia River Gorge, where the river cuts deep between basalt cliffs. Downstream, the Columbia widens out into a floodplain, full of islands and side-channels.
Visitors can begin a drive along the Historic Columbia River Highway nearby, which climbs partway up Mt. Hood and then winds through the Gorge. Originally constructed in 1913 to feature waterfalls and other views, the highway follows a ‘Wild and Scenic’ stretch of the Sandy River for several miles.
