Mouth of the Columbia River at the Pacific Ocean

Public art, environmental restoration, walks and viewpoints that hint at the site’s significance and history make up the project at Cape Disappointment State Park. Artist Maya Lin created a design that shapes visitors’ experiences with subtlety and an artist’s use of local materials; Washington State Parks also partnered on the project.

In the artwork and along trails, texts from a Chinook song and from Corps of Discovery journals echo the significance of this place. On the estuary side of the park, a long curved viewing platform extends out from the water’s edge to offer a view of Baker’s Bay. Nearby, next to the boat launch, a large sculpted block of basalt forms a fish-cleaning table inscribed with a traditional Chinook origin story. On the way to the ocean side of the park, a trail leads to a circular installation of standing driftwood trunks among living trees.
