Key Term: Superfund Site

A site identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as having abandoned hazardous waste that may harm people and the environment. By federal law (the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, or CERCLA), the EPA is authorized to compel whoever contaminated the sites to clean them up. When no responsible party can be identified for a Superfund site, the EPA draws from designated funding to clean up the site itself.
