Experiencing Art Installations and Architectural Structures
Observe the imagery related to petroglyphs on the Spirit Baskets and Welcome Gate by Native artist Lillian Pitt. What do you think they represent? Are they arranged in a composition that suggests a narrative?
Look at curvatures of the bridge, the walkways, retaining walls for plantings, and other elements. What do students notice about the curving forms? Are they geometric or organic? Do they repeat? What effect do they have? How do they connect to the landscape beyond the bridge?
Look for basketry patterns on the walkways and underneath the bridge. How are they made? How and where is the pattern repeated?
To include the plantings, what would the architects and engineers need to consider for designing the bridge? How could the plantings be sustainable? How could the bridge accommodate the extra weight of the soil? Look for components of rain water catchment systems. How is the runoff directed to water the plants?
