Steps in an Artistic Process

1. Conceptualize the work. An initial idea might be purely visual, or a concept, or an inspiration from another art form.

2. Gather information. If a public art work is to be created in a way that responds to its site or community, what would you want to know? When choosing materials, what would you want to know about them?

3. Develop ideas. You might produce a number of concept sketches, to work through a set of related ideas.

4. Organize art elements. Using materials and art elements (such as pattern, color, and texture), work toward a composition.

5. Reflect on and refine the work. Return to the work-in-progress to look at it in different ways. It is entirely possible that your work will continue to change direction, and end up quite different from your starting point.

6. Present the work to others.
