Artistic Process: Creating Public Art
Questions to guide your initial fact-finding and choice of a focus:
In your community:
- What public art, or outdoor art, exists in your community? How are the works of art connected to your community? How are they cared for, and are there occasions when they are celebrated?
- Is there a unique aspect or issue within your community that you believe would be well served by a public art work?
- What would you choose as a focus or point of inquiry for creating a work of public art that would have meaning for your community?
- For planning a school art installation, what materials will you choose that are durable? What conditions do they need to tolerate?
An artistic process:
- is open-ended, exploratory and creative. It can be a way of looking for new solutions to visual problems. You can work with an artistic process in an exploratory or experimental way, without necessarily concluding with a finished product.
- does not lead to an answer which is right or wrong, but some finished products can be more successful than others.
- is often individual and personal. A work of art can have very different meanings for different people who experience it.
- takes focus, to work through a visual idea.
