Attributes of Teacher Training as Catalyst

  • Emphasizes the importance of place –Provide teachers the opportunity and financial support to visit historical sites as a crucial investment in their teaching perspectives
  • Provides intensive teacher training –Create bonds and build relationships through a multiday training trip with colleagues from other schools; include tribal members, historians and project leaders
  • Assures informed understandings from dual perspectives –use multiple first- person resources
  • Sustains communication at frequent intervals post-training –Prompt participants about project responsibilities, deadlines and available resources; check in to see if help is needed
  • Gives ample lead time to plan –identify training dates and upcoming deadlines; give peers opportunities to regroup and establish communication avenues
  • Surveys teachers to co-construct training –use focus groups, e-mail surveys, identify needs
  • Aligns teacher training with school curricula –reference state standards; reference district guidelines and grade-level expectations
  • Wraps in teachers not part of the original training –Plan mini-workshops; provide access to resources; schedule collaboration meetings
  • Instructs teachers on using grant funding –Track school progress and advise teachers throughout the timeline of the project
  • Makes ongoing resources available –Support instruction with contacts for available tribal speakers, environmental and historical art
