Attributes of Creating Bonds with Tribal and Community Partners

  • Creates connections to a project at different levels and different times – Expand potential and opportunity for involvement
  • Consults with tribal resources to verify authenticity –Consult Native American representatives to edit images and text for products for a project
  • Establishes key organizations as contacts –Contact Northwest Native American Veterans Association, U.S. Park Service, government and civic agencies, museums, state arts commissions
  • Trains teachers in tribal culture and history –Include Native American speakers as resources and provide in-depth opportunities to connect for teachers and tribal members
  • Uses key messages to reach out to students –Transfer new understandings from teacher to students and encourage students, in turn, to reach out to their families
  • Plans for more than an after-school project or activity –Embed project learning within the school day at developmentally appropriate levels; connect with curricula for all grades in the school
